Top Ten List

My wife HK was gone all last week on her skiing vacation, which left me with sole 'custody' of our two dogs.  I have introduced them before, Oliver the crazy little Jack Russell terrier, and Coco, our Golden Doodle, who runs the show.   HK was concerned that I would have no idea how to care for her dogs, but I told her no need to worry.  Raising dogs and raising kids (I have two sons, who are now older, but I've been there.) are very similar.  When she asked how that can be, I had a list of ten ready for her.  The ways that teenage boys and dogs are very much alike.

10.  Both sleep all the time.  Teenagers and dogs have the 'nap' thing down to a fine science.  They both can fall asleep at the drop of a hat.

  9.  Filth and squaller doesn't bother either one.  Dogs really have no care about where they hang out. Have you ever seen a teenage boy's bedroom?

  8.  Cars.  Boys want to take the car everywhere.  Dogs want to ride in the car everywhere.

  7.  You got to convince dogs and teenager that bathing is a good idea.  (To keep me safe from my two, they were pretty good about this.  But many I know with kids have had issues here).

  6.  Teenagers and dogs sometimes do dumb things.
There were times that as a parent with kids, you just stop and shake your head.   It's the same way raising dogs.  When they do some of the things they do, you just stop and wonder.

   5.   When it comes to their parents, both teenagers and dogs pretend that we don't exist.  That is until they want something.  Then see how quick they come running.

    4.  One thing nice about dogs, is they really don't care about money.   Kids on the other hand...

    3.  And when it comes to the opposite sex.  We will leave this one alone, though all parents know the answer to this, when it comes down to a lovesick child.

    2.  Both make a lot of noise.  Dogs bark, and teenagers with the stereos and telephones, you name it, they blast it.  Teenagers also do a lot of barking, if you know what i mean.

And finally, the number one similarity between teenagers and dogs...

    1.  They both can eat anything, anytime and everywhere.  And as much as they can shove in their mouth...

All in all, I survived the week with the dogs, and over twenty years with the boys.  And in fairness, both were incredible experiences that get better everyday.

Back Tuesday with another So as I was Saying essay.

We will talk soon
